Botanical places around us

You do not have to go far to find unique diversity. Jotunheimen holds the altitude record for many of our mountain plants, with issoleia (Ranunculus glacialis) growing highest of all.

Much of the reason for the rich plant life in the national park is the lime-rich ground. This provides fertile ground for several demanding and lime-intensive plants, such as reindeer pink. Some of these plant species are found only in the mountainous areas north of the Atlantic Ocean, such as mountain shear blossoms, furry rocks and mountain tar blossoms.

This has puzzled botanists, who believe the species may have survived the last ice age in isolated, ice-free areas on the coast or on mountain peaks that protruded above the glacier.
